An Air Waybill (AWB) is the fundamental document for air cargo shipments. Unlike ocean bills of lading, AWBs are non-negotiable and do not serve as documents of title. There are two types: Master AWB (MAWB) issued by airlines and House AWB (HAWB) issued by freight forwarders for consolidated shipments. The AWB number (11 digits: 3-digit airline prefix + 8-digit serial) is used for tracking throughout the journey.

Air Waybill examples

  • An AWB numbered 020-12345678 indicates Lufthansa Cargo (prefix 020) issued the waybill.

How AWB is used in freight operations

AWB appears in quotations, bookings, shipping documents, and tracking updates. Confirm how it applies to your shipment with your carrier, forwarder, or customs representative, because practice can differ by country and contract.
