Spot Rate – Meaning & Examples
The current market rate for immediate shipment, without a long-term contract.
- Related terms
- market rate, current rate, immediate rate
Spot rate is the freight rate available in the open market for immediate or near-term shipment. Unlike contract rates negotiated annually, spot rates fluctuate with supply and demand. During peak seasons or capacity shortages, spot rates can be significantly higher than contract rates. Spot rates provide flexibility but less price certainty. They're commonly used for ad-hoc shipments or when contract space is unavailable.

How Spot Rate is used in freight operations
