A Vessel Operating Common Carrier (VOCC) is a shipping company that operates ocean-going vessels and provides transportation services to the public. Unlike NVOCCs, VOCCs own or charter the actual ships. Major VOCCs include Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Cosco. VOCCs issue Master Bills of Lading and set base freight rates. They may form alliances to share vessel space and expand route coverage.
